In fundraising, long tenure is often seen as a strength, but staying too long or leaving poorly can create risk for both individuals and organisations. Drawing on nearly 30 years in the sector, including eight years in a senior role at the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Western Australia, this session explores the realities of moving on from a role deeply embedded in relationships, identity and organisational knowledge. It also reflects on transitioning into a new leadership role at Richmind WA, and how fundraising approaches and stakeholder expectations can shift across contexts. This session provides a practical framework for recognising when it is time to move on, and how to do so while protecting relationships, preserving momentum and strengthening the organisation beyond any one individual.
